Tyrol is a state or Bundesland, located in the west of Austria. It comprises the Austrian part of the historical region of Tyrol. The state is split into two parts - called North Tyrol and East Tyrol - by a 20km-wide strip of land where the state of Salzburg borders directly on the Italian Province of Bolzano-Bozen (Alto Adige/South Tyrol). North Tyrol borders Bavaria (Germany) in the north, the state of Vorarlberg in the west, Italy and Switzerland in the south and Salzburg in the east. East Tyrol also borders Carinthia in the east.

The highest mountain in the state is the Großglockner in the Hohe Tauern, with an elevation of 3,798 m (12,461 ft.). This is second only to the highest mountain of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, the Ortler, 3,905 m (12,812 ft.). The capital is Innsbruck. The town is known for its university, especially the modern techniques in medicine. Tyrol is popular for its famous skiing resorts, such as Kitzbühel, Ischgl or St. Anton. Other larger towns are Kufstein, Schwaz, Reutte and Landeck.

Tyrol Tourist Attractions and Landmarks

Bruck Castle
Located on a hill close to the Hochstein, the local mountain of Lienz. It is located in a mixed forest. The name “Bruck” derives from the bridge at its foot. The collection includes an art collection with paintings and graphic as well as plastic pieces of art, an archeological section that is dedicated to the Roman settlement Aguntum, objects from Tyrolean folklore and rare minerals. On a regular basis there are special exhibitions.

Cistercian Abbey
Founded in 1202 by the Babenberg duke Leopold VI. The construction of the medieval abbey was finished in 1263.

Goldenes Dachl / Golden Roof
Golden Roof is a landmark in Innsbruck, Austria built in 1500. It was decorated with 2657 fire-gilded copper tiles for Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. The reliefs on the balcony show coats of arms, symbols and other figures in his life.

Liebfrauenkirche

Museum Tiroler Bauernhöfe
Between Innsbruck and Kufstein - in the field of Kramsacher lakes - in 1974 the Tyrolean Air Museum was founded. Ein wenig abseits der Landstraße Kramsach-Breitenbach, östlich des Reintaler Sees, durch Terrassen und Hügelreihen gegliedert, ist das Gelände in ruhiger Lage zu finden. A little off the road Kramsach-Breitenbach, Reintaler east of the lake, with terraced hills and rows of structured, the terrain is in a quiet location to find.

Pfarrkirche

Zell am Ziller Parish Church
Situated on 479 kilometers west of the capitol Vienna and just sixty kilometers east of Innsbruck. This town, which once has gold-mining industry definitely merits a visit, but don not confuse it with Zell am See in Land Salzburg.
